About
Luminary Books (formerly Shelby's Book Shoppe) is an independent used and new bookstore located in Gardnerville, Nevada, near the beautiful Lake Tahoe.
The shop was created in 2005 by founder Linda Finch, under the name Eddy St. Book Exchange.
The bookstore was purchased in 2020 by Carson Valley native Bethany Davey Frediani, whose love of books has inspired her to cultivate and develop the shop to ensure that it flourishes far into the future.
Bethany has carried on the canine tradition by styling the new logo after the current bookshop dog, Sirius Black (named after his parents’ love of the Harry Potter books).

Shop
Our store is filled with gently loved and brand new books of all genres just waiting to be discovered by a new reader.
If you are local to Northern Nevada, you can stop by our retail location in Gardnerville and give shop dogs Sirius and Phoebe a belly rub while you're here.
Our inventory includes:
-
Limited selection of vintage books
-
Coffee table books
-
Children's books
-
Fiction titles & non-fiction titles
-
And more!
You never know what you’ll find in a used bookstore! New books arrive daily and it’s like a treasure hunt every time.
Credit
Our used book credit program is at the heart of what we do and allows us to keep our inventory fresh, diverse, and well-stocked.
We are currently accepting books on Tuesdays and Thursdays only.
We selectively accept gently-used paperback fiction and non-fiction, as well as selective hardcovers (think popular new releases within the last year or nonfiction) and like-new CD audiobooks.
Credit Rate
-
Paperbacks receive $.50 store credit each.
-
Hardcovers & audiobooks receive $1 store credit each.
-
New releases and bestsellers receive $1.50-$2.50 store credit each
Store credit may be redeemed on used books, and for half of an in-store purchase (not usable online)he remainder of the purchase must be paid by cash or credit/debit card. Any remaining store credit will be recorded and given to you to use later. We don’t keep customer files, so you must bring your credit back with you to use next time.
When choosing books to bring in, consider:
-
We sell all books brought in to us, so if they’re not in a condition you would buy, chances are neither would anyone else. We don’t sell water-damaged, stained, marked-up, or otherwise falling apart items.
-
Please make sure that all audiobook CDs are present.
-
We have a strict zero cigarette smoke policy.
-
Staff reserves the right to make final decisions on all books.
Thank you for bringing us your books!
